Theoretically we are supposed to live in a 'just' society. In England and Wales, we largely assume that we will be treated with fairness and that our voices will be heard. As a Catholic living in the UK, I try to integrate this sense of fairness and justice into every aspect of my daily life.

Tillie

Justice is described by Catholics as a 'Cardinal Virtue'. It's something that is so important that I'm called to repeatedly put it into practice if I am to live a good life.

Being just is something I try to get into the habit of being. It doesn't always come naturally, and sometimes I really have to pray for the strength to do the right thing.

Many people outside of my Church choose to live this way too, but my motivation for striving to live this way is rooted in my belief in and love of God. Besides, I don't think I could do it on my own without God's help!

'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?" Jesus replied, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.'
Matthew's Gospel, chapter 25, verses 37 and 40.

How fair and just are you in your relationships and dealings with others?

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
Martin Luther King Jnr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16th, 1963. Taken from www.quoteland.com.

"The just 'person' - is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbour'."
Catechism of the Catholic Church 1807

I don't feel I can live my life just as a passive observer. I can't turn my back on those in need and it's my duty to try to help them as I can. I also believe that it's my responsibility to speak out if I see an injustice. There's no point always expecting someone else to put things right!

Here are some of the human rights I feel honour bound to speak about. Are there any you'd add to my list?
