Friends are very important people in our lives with whom we talk to, share with and ask advice. Often they are people from whom we learn things about ourselves and life. In the Catholic tradition, we have "spiritual" friendships with people who live in heaven. We call them "Saints" and often seek their help as we would a neighbour or friend here on earth. Sounds spooky - read on!

What is a friend?

"A friend is a person, someone who I am in relationship with for a short time or for a lifetime."

"My friends are people with whom I learn from, laugh with and talk to about life, the Universe and what's on special offer at the supermarket!"

The Catholic Church officially declares someone to be a saint because during their lifetime because they have loved God and their neighbour in a heroic and exemplary way. They are believed to now live in heaven. The proof for this has come in the form of miracles (unexplained good events), which have happened when people have prayed to them. But what has that got to do with me, you say?

Well, just as is the case with human friendships, I feel drawn to befriend these "spiritual friends" (Saints) because I feel, not only that I have something in common with them, but that I can learn something from them. Check out www.catholic.org/saints.

"The road to a friend's house is never long."
Danish proverb, taken from www.quoteland.com

Although the Saints now live in heaven, I get to know them through their own writings or through what others might have written about them. Sometimes I even ask them for help, by confiding in them a need or person, just as you would in a normal friendship. I believe that in heaven they pray for me and try to help.

Some Catholic spiritual friends:

Saint Thomas More

Held the office of Chancellor of England in the 16th Century. He resigned from his post on May 16th 1532, after King Henry VIII assumed control of the Church in England. Thomas was sent to prison for not recognising the King's supremacy in spiritual affairs. This was to cost Thomas his life. His last words were "I die the King's good servant and God's first". Thomas is regarded as a hero of conscience, staying true to his religious beliefs whatever it cost. He is regarded as the Patron Saint (Spiritual Friend) of Politicians.

Mother Teresa

Worked with the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta, India, for over 50 years. She was born into a rich family in Albania, and in 1950 she founded a religious order of nuns dedicated to the poor - feeding them, clothing them and ensuring they died with dignity. In 1979 she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. She was 87 when she died, and her life work was best summed up when she said "I see God in every human being. When I wash the leper's wounds, I feel I am nursing the Lord himself. Is it not a beautiful experience?" Interview CNN, 1974

Archbishop Oscar Romero

Was assassinated in 1980 in El Salvador, South America, for criticising and condemning the repression of ordinary people by the military and political authorities. He was martyred (killed) for speaking out about the basic rights of the poor people whom he served. Foreseeing his death, he said days before it, "A Bishop will die, but the church of God, which is the people, will never perish".
