Have you ever spent time just listening to nature? It may have been during your annual holiday by the sea and you listened to the sound of the waves? Perhaps it was the sound of the crickets on a hot summer’s night? The natural world is such an amazing gift and from a young age, my faith has taught me it is to be respected and protected.

Tillie

The former head of the Catholic Church worldwide (Pope John Paul II), invited all people to respect nature, reminding us all that we have a God-given responsibility to safeguard God's creation for the generations to come. He has written what's called a 'Green Manifesto' which calls for each one of us to be more ecologically aware.

"Simplicity, moderation and discipline, as well as the spirit of sacrifice, must become part of everyday life, if we are to become stewards of nature."
Pope John Paul II, Message for the World Day of Peace, 1990.

As part of the Manifesto, recycling was actively encouraged. It was also stated that we should all be considering ways we can change our lifestyles to protect our natural world; that includes plant life, fish, birds, reptiles, the animal kingdom and the whole planet!

What steps are you taking to safeguard Mother Nature?

"In all things of nature there is something of the marvellous."
Aristotle, Historia Animalium, Pan Dictionary of Religious Quotations, pg. 300.

What would you answer to the following?:

Cartoon image of a rubbish bin

How many objects that you throw in the bin could be reused?

What happens to the waste products that leave your home?

What effects do the chemicals you use in your house have on the environment?

I tried to answer these questions honestly and when I did I was pretty unhappy. I decided to make a change in my life and little by little I have adjusted. I've realised that it is my responsibility to try to be ecologically minded, and to try to think about how I use the resources I've been entrusted with.
