Image of Tillie, your guide for this section

Music, theatre, film, paintings - I love the arts, don't you? They are inspired and inspiring at the same time. However, I do find that I have to be discerning about what I do and don't watch and listen to. Some material can be more life sapping than life giving!

My number 1's
Inspirational music:

Handel's Messiah (it tells the story of Christ's life).

Theatre play:

It would have to be a Midsummer Night's Dream, by William Shakespeare.

Artists:

Leonardo de Vinci (he was a man ahead of his time!).

Cinema and the Internet:

Not so easy, but if push came to shove, the film called 'Gandhi'.

What would your number one film be and why?

Ratings are given to classify film content but they are based on what's appropriate for the age of the viewer. Is 'age' the best determining factor for censorship?

Below you'll find the film ratings used in England and Wales. Would you change these if you were basing it on how you would like a better society to be?

The Golden Compass

Golden Compass film image

The film, 'The Golden Compass,' raises a host of fascinating questions about religious belief and the role of fantasy. Yet the author is a confessed atheist? Isn't this a total contradiction in terms? More

A Film That Raises Questions and Leaves You To Discover The Answers

A life of monastic silence is a life that few can comprehend, let alone try out.

"What I see of this story and there are no other stories quite like it are faith, hope, love and forgiveness. We're desperately in need of those things in the world."
Mel Gibson, speaking about the film "The Passion of the Christ", taken from The Reader's Digest, March 2004, pg. 67.

"None can sense more deeply than you artists, ingenious creators of beauty that you are, something of the pathos which God at the dawn of creation looked upon the work of his hands. A shimmer of the feeling has shone so often in your eyes."
Pope John Paul II, Letter to Artists, 1999.

COMMENT!

? ? ?

"I love the arts when they promote peace, truth and tolerance."

"Art is an expression of how someone feels and it’s intended to speak for the artist. It's just a reflection of what they perceive exists or could be. It's wrong to refuse someone their right to an opinion."

"We all take entertainment far too seriously. I love a shoot'em up and kill'em. It's just entertainment."

"I think that our sources of entertainment can promote extremes, and the danger is that we begin to mistake it for normality."

"A lot of what entertains us is total nonsense, but I think it's good not to take life too seriously sometimes."
