The use of channels which connect our natural life with God's supernatural nature are central to Catholic belief and practice. That isn't to say we believe in the power of material things like crystals. We don't. We have channels which we believe are the only true and authentic ones in the whole world. Through them we make contact with supernatural life and believe any other forms of "channelling" are false and don't lead to good things. Intrigued?

Think of the physical make-up of your body. It is made up of skin, flesh, vital organs, muscles, bones and blood, amongst other things. Blood plays a central life-giving role and veins provide the channels through which this life giving blood can circulate round the body.

In a similar way, there are veins in the body of the Catholic Church which are special life giving channels. They are called "Sacraments". Catholics receive them as gifts of God himself. Sacraments make possible the touching of God (the divine). Seven sacraments are officially recognised as channels of supernatural life.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

All the seven sacraments have their origin in the life and teachings of our founder, Jesus Christ. They are:

Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Communion, Confirmation, Matrimony (marriage), Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick

In this section we will be exploring exactly what they are and how we can access them.

COMMENT!

? ? ?

"That sounds totally crazy. Channels of supernatural life. Forget it?"

"I'm fascinated by this. You can make contact with the supernatural in the Catholic Church? It's much more interesting than I'd ever thought of before."

"I regularly receive the Sacraments. My life would be much poorer without them. They bring me real peace and, at times, strength when I really need it."

Catholic channels are made up of:

Number 1.

An outward visual sign – such as the use of water and bread.

Number 2.

An interior gift or "grace" – such as the forgiveness of serious things we have done wrong. This forgiveness brings peace.
